I'm an artist myself and interested in these debates. For me, you can draw a complete set from a reference non problem, that's what references are for. As to how much you can alter, it depends on your discourse: for example, you make as much alterations as you like, that's your freedom as an artist, as long as you don't claim it to be historically accurate or that your representation is in any way scholarly reserached. That's my opinion ;) I'm not aware of any grave rules...
