Question about hanfu skirt shapes

I've been looking at a ton of photos and videos of hanfu, as well as patterns, and it's hard to believe that the skirts are just pleated rectangles. My prototype skirt isn't nearly as voluminous as others that I've seen. Am I getting the shape wrong, or is it just the amount/type of fabric used that makes the difference? If I use a more flowy fabric with more pleats, will I get a skirt more similar to the ones I keep seeing in photos? Thanks!
