This girl in Chinese costume is holding a kite. In ancient China, kites were called Zhiyuan(纸鸢). Kites were invented by the Chinese over 2000 years ago. By the time of the Northern and Southern Dynasties(420-589A.D.), kites began to be used as a means of conveying messages. By the time of the Song Dynasty(960-1279), kite flying became a popular outdoor activity. In the Northern Song Dynasty, Zhang Zeduan's Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival also shows people flying kites.
