2025 Changsha Houhu Huazhao Festival: A Gen Z & Tradition Fusion

On April 12, 2025, Changsha’s Houhu Lake hosted the Huazhao Festival, blending Hanfu culture with youthful energy. Gen Z participants donned traditional attire for photo ops, parades, and interactive games, while stalls showcased crafts like oil-paper umbrellas, silk fans, and Hanfu accessories. The event featured “flower deity” meet-and-greets, performances, and a vibrant market with local snacks and (cultural creative) products. Students highlighted how the festival offered a low-cost, immersive way to experience heritage, breaking stereotypes of ICH as outdated. By merging Hanfu fashion with social media-friendly activities, the event bridged tradition and modernity, fostering a “two-way embrace” between Gen Z and ancient customs. Organizers aim to sustain this model, revitalizing folklore through youth-driven creativity and community engagement.
